10 Things Every Widowed Single Mom Wants You To Know

Dear reader,

The following blog post was written in June of 2017. In light of recent events I decided it was time to press publish.

-Shaniqua

It’s after 2:30am and I am sitting up in bed jotting down notes in an attempt to recall the last time I felt like myself. The answer came to me pretty quickly, it was when my husband was alive.

Over the last couple of weeks I have begun to evaluate life and assess what’s a benefit or detriment to it. As I am thinking about changes that need to be made it all revolves around the fact that I am parenting alone.

A lot of people parent alone and have the misfortune of never having the other parent present in the child’s life. I can’t speak to that experience and I won’t attempt to.

I am addressing life as a widowed single mom after having the “husband, child, house, dog and white picket fence”. Life as we knew it was set because we (widowed single moms) said our vows till death do us part. We established our families without expecting anything to change until it did.
So in an attempt to resonate with my widowed single mothers and educate everyone else I created this list of 10 things every widowed single mother would want you to know.

10. You abandoned her

She’s no longer your married friend you can chat with about your husband drama. She isn’t that friend you can call for couples game night. She’s not your all American career woman or soccer mom you want to partner with or head up the PTA. What she was to you can’t possibly still exist so you have no use for her presence and your calls and invitations cease to exist.

In my own life from friendships I had to brands I used to blog for there has been a shift. Why invite me out to be social when all you talk about or represent is the perfect nuclear family. I can’t possibly be relatable anymore so there is an unbearable silence, and we are cut out of your lives.

Well first our husbands died and now our friendships and careers died along with it.

9. She is lonely

Let me be clear, lonely is NOT desperate so just because a widow has lost a husband it doesn’t mean she is going to go flocking to any person for affection or attention. Widowed single moms are lonely because they lost their companion and their best friend they spoke to each day.

There is a reason she was married to that man and it’s more than likely because they could brave the world better together. They were able to come home from work and talk about their days and their worries like they could with no other.

Now she is in a house with a child who she wouldn’t dream dumping any woes of the day onto over dinner. She is forced to internalize everything and absorb all that went wrong in her child’s day. Since she has been abandoned now she has no one to talk to.

8. She is always hurting even though the smiles.

When you lose not only a soulmate but a life partner you raised your child with it’s an unbearable pain.

Personally I would rather go into labor all over every year than to deal with this hurt. It’s an emotion that smacks you in the face at the oddest and most inconvenient times. To make matters worse it never goes away.

The pain is permanent and it feels like someone took some of your heart away including your capability to love and heal. The hurt never stops.

7. Unless you are a single widowed mom, you can’t relate to her.

Dealing with loss

Loss is inevitable and at some point every creature on earth loses someone they love. That love can send you into a debilitating grief after a loss. When you witness a family member or friend who experiences any loss some feel they can relate. People who have lost a parent may tell others they relate when that person loses a child. Others may have lost a sibling and proclaim to relate to someone who lost a spouse. None of these losses are the same. Let me say that again, NONE OF THESE LOSSES ARE THE SAME and I can probably write a book on all the reasons why they are not. It is due to there differences that specific grief counseling groups, retreats and books even exist.

What’s more even if you did share the same type of loss you still may not fully understand a person’s pain. I personally lost my biological father who was somewhat absentee at the age of 5 years old. My son lost his father (my husband) when he was 5. His father was very present and active with him. My son went through and continues to go through stages of grief I don’t recognize or relate. The relationship I had with my father was different and I am not a boy who lost his father and mentor. I didn’t have fears that I suddenly needed to “protect my mom” when my father died and so on.

So back to the point unless you are a single widowed mom, you can’t relate to her so you need to consider that you have no understanding of what she has been through and will continue to go through.

again..

6. Unless you are a single widowed mom, you can’t relate to her.

Dealing with working husbands and partners

You may be married or partnered raising your child(dren) with the help of your husband or partner. Perhaps they are workaholics or lazy bums. You end up taking on a lot of the household duties; bringing home the bacon, keeping house and raising the kids. No matter how absentee your partner is at some point that partner does support you even if you feel those efforts are lackluster. In your moments of frustration you exclaim “I feel like a single mom”. How sway? Your husband or partner is actually there, alive. Just stop for a second and make a comparison list with two columns. On the left put all the things (insert name) does to help. On the right put all the things a widowed single moms husband/partner does to help and make sure to leave the entire list blank. I think you get my point now.

If you still don’t understand what I am saying about any of this go watch Collateral Beauty or something. It’s a movie about someone dealing with loss.

3 Parenting Learning Lessons I Taught My Son After Spider-Man Homecoming

Spider-Man became more than just your “Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man”

I had the privilege of getting a sneak peek into the latest Sony release of Spider-Man Homecoming featuring Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Jon Favreau, Donald Glover, Tyne Daly with Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr. during a press junket a couple of weeks ago.

– New York, NY – 6/25/17 – attend a Press Conference for Marvel Studios’ “SPIDER-MAN – HOMECOMING”. The film stars Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Robert Downey Jr, Zendaya and Marisa Tomei. It releases in theaters nationwide on June 28, 2017.

-Location: The Whitby Hotel

What I loved most about the movie was the takeaway lessons to be taught to my son and the true authenticity Tom Holland brought into his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man along with Michael Keaton’s return to screen. Let me explain how and there will be spoiler alerts!

Perseverance

Spider-Man was viewed as the young, not quite the hero who often made mistakes. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) who had him under his wing and putting him under the supervision of Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) seemed to anticipate Spider-Man’s failure. With perseverance Spider-Man set to prove he was more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

Loyalty

Peter Parker had amazing friends in Ned (Jacob Batalon) and Michelle (Zendaya). Throughout the movie time and again it was their loyalty to each other that help them conquered some of the toughest decisions and obstacles they faced.

Character

As the plot twist Peter Parker had to decide on choosing the desires of his heart versus what Spider-Man knows to be morally right. As the movie goes on you see a young man grow in character with every new obstacle faced.

With all the action packed fun me and DJ (my son) loved the movie. I was also able to talk him about these three learning lessons. The day we saw the film was particularly trying for me as a mom so ending the day by having the movie be the perfect segway into a teaching moment for DJ made the whole experience that much more enjoyable.

For those in the late 30’s generation like me you will absolutely love the villain/hero dynamic in the Vulture (Micheal Keaton) vs Spider-Man scenes. Seeing Michael Keaton back in action was exciting!

Spider-Man Homecoming Cast Press Conference

During the press conference I attended the following day the actors addressed how there were two generations of actors in the cast and they all admitted to being able to learn from one another. With so much to learn on and off screen this is a film you must see this summer on July 7th to be exact.

Spider-Man Homecoming is in a theater near you. Meanwhile check out the trailer.

Disney Pixar “Cars 3” Advanced Screening Giveaway!

Disclosure: This is not a sponsored post however I have been given advanced screening passes for my myself and my audience. Words and opinions are my own.

A Sports Comeback For all generations

It’s been 11 years since my Cars fascination began even prior to becoming a mom. I was a nanny who cared for two young boys and our favorite past time was watching the Cars movie, reading the Cars books and playing with you guessed it, cars!

Fast forward to today everyone is all grown up, those boys me and of course Lighting McQueen. In Cars 3 he is at the end of his career. We were first introduced to Lightning McQueen (voice Owen Wilson) in Cars 2006 as an arrogant young racer who needed to be taken back to school by a more seasoned Doc Hudson. This years Cars 3 is said to mirror similarities as the first movie.

Lighting McQueen is now the mature and grounded racer who faces off with a younger and cocky racer Jackson Storm.

Jackson Storm, Voice: Armie Hammer
In addition to Storm we can expect new characters like Cruz Ramirez who plays a  technician, trainer and sidekick to Lightning McQueen.

Cruz Ramirez, voice: Cristela Alonzo
Miss Fritter the derby racer monster truck is looking like a bad aaaaahhhh oh you get what I mean as real life voice Lea DeLaria.

Miss Fritter, voice Lea DeLaria
Super-smarty-pants statistician Natalie Certain is played by non other than Kerry Washington and there is so much more.

Natalie Certain, voice: Kerri Washington
There will be cartoon cameos of  real life racers and some characters from the original Cars. Me and DJ are already amped up to see Cars 3 which comes to theaters nationwide on June 16th. If you are just as much of a fan you won’t want to miss this giveaway for the advanced screening.

The New York Baby Show & Momtrends Blogger Lounge #AD

The New York Baby Show Experience

The largest show in the country for new and expecting parents, The New York Baby Show was held in New York City on May 20th & 21st at Pier 94. I had the pleasure of joining the Momtrends team who hosted bloggers in a lounge as we fueled up before experiencing the vast event.

As a single widowed mom of a 7 year old who is not expecting it was a pleasant surprise to find tools I could use for my not so small baby. Here were four of my favorites that parents can enjoy who have children in broad age ranges or who may be raising a singleton like me.

Disclosure: I have been compensated on this post however the selection of my favorite picks, words and views were my own.

Canon

Canon

Capturing memories is one of the greatest things we value as humans. As parents we want to be able to tell a story to our children for generations to come. One of New York Baby show sponsors Canon showcased their photo books and gave me ideas I could use to collect photos of my family when my husband was alive and for years to come. I happen to have a Canon Rebel i6 and I was stoked to check out the new i7 too! You don’t have to be a pro to use Canon cameras either which leads me to my next pick.

Class with Jennifer Borget

Jennifer Borget

Canon presented “Child’s Play: Simple Tips For Photographing Children” Taught by Jennifer Borget

Jennifer is best known as a blogger who has done an amazing job as a self taught photographer who captures her family in breath taking photos with her Canon cameras. Now the owner if Cherish 365 she pairs with Canon to teach the everyday user how to achieve these high quality photos at home.

I have long been a fan of Jennifer’s blogging style and photography work, she is one of the reasons I aspired to blog and purchase my first Canon! It was such a pleasure to finally meet her in person and learn how to go beyond my “auto” camera settings. My take away… stop trying to get DJ to pose for pictures, capture candidly in his element.

Chess At Three

DJ has a lesson with Chess At Three

I have long suspected but confirmed this week that DJ has ADHD. I was given advice to try using games like chess to help him focus. Chess At Three has a wonderful way of instructing children on the game through storytelling. Starting at three years old they send a tutor to your home to give your child a personalized lesson. There are even options to start a group class among friends. This is a resource I have to use hands down as a embark on this new journey of IEP and keeping my son on track academically. I want him to have a fun learning experience at home and this program will meet that need.

Apiari

Just in the last 24 hours I had to get my son from school fighting an ear infection and fever, get him to my mom, go to the ER, get my son again, my medicine, dinner, bath and bed routine.. you get my point. What if life was made more simple by having night help, a fully cooked meal and cleaning help on hand. Apiari offers a babysitting housekeeper and  fully cooked meal delivery in addition to other postpartum services.  As a single mom when my family isn’t available this is something I will definately need.

More on The New York Baby Show

With over 200 exhibitors and sponsors and 5000 families in attendance this year I guarantee you would have found something that works for you in all stages of parenting. Some of the show featured were classes, a cafe, lounges, giveaways and more. If you want to know what you missed be sure to attend next year and check out New York Baby Show online, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

Dessert and Wine Pairing with Pipernilli

A Vegan Dessert and Wine Pairing

A quaint and cozy event has arrived in Brooklyn delighting your palate with delicious vegan desserts paired nicely with vegan wines. I am describing a Pipernilli unforgettable wine tasting event. Upon arrival you are greeted with soft music and lighting and a lovely table arrangement displayed with a personal protected tray of your offerings for the event.

A wine pairing is perfect for any 21+ crowd whether you are solo, on a date or with friends. The setting promotes an organic social interaction among everyone in attendance. Then just before the tasting begins the wine is poured.

For the event I attended, White Cliff Vineyard a family owned and operated vegan wine farm from Gardiner, NY provided the paired wines. My personal favorite was Red Trail wine with the Pipernilli blueberry cookie. I also enjoyed The White Ruby Port wine with the Pipernilli apricot cheesecake.

My take home treats; Blueberry cookies and “Red Trail” wine

Overall if I had to go through all my favorite Pipernilli treats I would be listing their whole menu! This is my favorite vegan dessert company and something I insist you try. The products and hosted events are at an affordable price. For those on a fitness journey the smaller portions makes it a guilt free treat of the day.

Want To know more?

Founder S.R Davis conceptualized her miniature size desert company after leaving the fashion industry where most part goers wouldn’t finish a whole cookie. Pipernilli offers the best 1-2 bite taste of cookies, pies, tarts and more. In addition to offering at the wine tastings, Pipernilli is for hire for private events and local consumer product purchase year round. Get in touch with the latest from Pipernilli online and follow them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

We are cooking up a bright future with NY’s 529 College Savings Program

Disclaimer: This is a sponsored post, I have been compensated in an effort to educate my audience on the NY529 College Savings Program.

Cooking Up A Bright Future

Last week I learned all about how to get financially prepared for DJ’s college years by investing with NY’s 529 College Savings Program while DJ had a fun cooking lesson with The Institute of Culinary Education. I was pleasantly surprised how contributing into a savings even as a widowed single mom would be affordable and effortless. To start let me begin with the basics to help you understand how it works.

What is a 529 College Savings Plan?

It’s a type of investment account you can use for higher-education savings. 529 plans are usually sponsored by states. You can use it to pay for anything that’s considered a qualified higher-education expense, including tuition, books, supplies, equipment, expenses for the purchase of certain computer equipment, software and computer-related services and certain room and board fees.

Just about anybody can open a 529 account- parents, grandparents other relatives, friends as long as he or she is a U.S citizen or a resident alien. As an account owner you’ll pick investments assign a beneficiary and determine how the money is used. If you’re a New York State taxpayer you can also benefit from the state tax deduction.

Fun Facts:

  • On holidays, birthdays and special occasions family and friends can contribute to the 529 account using a special “Ugift” code.
  • Beneficiaries can attend college in any state, not just the state sponsoring the #529 plan.
  • A beneficiary can have more than one account. For example, parents can open an account for a child and grandparents can open an account for the same child.
  • There is no age limit for beneficiaries of a 529.
  • 529 funds can be transferred to a close relative of the beneficiary if he or she doesn’t need the money.

Can 529 accounts only be used to pay for college?

No. Your 529 account can pay for qualified higher-education expenses at any eligible education institution including; post secondary trade and vocational schools, 2 and 4 year colleges and postgraduate programs.

How much can I invest?

529 account contribution limits are generally high from $200,000 to $300,000 or more depending on the state. For the Direct Plan you can contribute up to $375,000 on behalf of one beneficiary. This amount includes all New York-Sponsored 529 Savings accounts held for the same beneficiary.

How does this help with my taxes?

Tax Savings. Your earnings grow federally tax-deferred, qualified withdrawals are tax-free* and some states like New York have other tax benefits**.

*Earnings on nonqualified withdrawals may be subject to federal income tax and a 10% federal penalty tax as well as state and local income taxes. Tax and other benefits are contingent on meeting other requirements and certain withdrawals are subject to federal, state and local taxes.

** Up to $10,000 is deductible annually from New York Stare income for married couples filing jointly; single taxpayers can deduct up to $5,000 annually. May be subject to recapture in certain circumstances such as rollovers to another state’s 529 plan or nonqualified withdrawals.

What you should know.

Investments in the plan are subject to risk. Before you invest, consider whether your beneficiary’s home state offers any state tax or other benefits that are only available for investments in that state’s 529 plan.

New York’s 529 College Savings Program currently includes two separate 529 plans. The Direct Plan is sold directly by the Program. You may also participate in the Advisor Plan, which is sold exclusively through financial advisors and has different investment options and higher fees.

To learn more about NY 529 you can check out their site at www.NYSaves.org and follow them on Twitter, Youtube and Facebook. If you have more questions be sure to check their F.A.Q‘s in the site.

Modeled after the Temple of Airjitzu, the two-story play structure puts guests’ physical skills to the test as they fight to save Ninjago City. Together, adults and children will test their balance, agility, strength and endurance to become a Spinjitzu Master, all while experiencing more than 20 interactive features.

A Look Inside

Each section includes rules along with the age requirements for that area so all parents can be assured children are playing at their own skill level.

Age requirement and rules

DJ was a fan of the led light up game where there is a 1-2 player option testing your speed and reflexes. He beat out his opponent which happened to be his older cousin.

The boys are prepping for play
DJ is on a mission to win

He also really loved climbing this rock wall structure and tapping the led light at the top. When tapped a Ninja voice echos a phrase I couldn’t quite make out but no doubt it still captures your attention.
